The OVL portal (https://ovl.oceandatalab.com) now includes ESA CCI products, enabling users to explore the evolution of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and its anomaly from 2010 to the present.

The following products are available globally:

  • Monthly SST (daily SST ESA CCI product has been averaged over a month): https://odl.bzh/zKivgog6
  • Monthly SST anomaly (a Monthly climatology have been computed from ESA CCI daily SST over the 1982-2009 period and subtracted from the monthly SST): https://odl.bzh/PZ_qwgfr

Animations showcasing the evolution of Monthly SST, and Monthly SST Anomaly were created using the SEAShot camera tool:

Many well known phenomena can be observed in those videos, among them one can highlight:
  • The Warm water propagating across the Pacific ocean during major El Nino events
  • A significant warming of the surface ot the ocean revealed by the SST anomaly data, particularly at high latitudes.
